DIY Cabinet Painting

If you want to learn about the easiest way of painting your cabinets, look no further than DIY cabinet painting. White colored cabinets are a very popular option. The best part about painting your cabinet white is that you can do it as a DIY project and complete the task without much fuss or bother. All that is required is to first remove the doors from the cabinet and then one has to also remove the hardware from the cabinet. Once this has been done, it is then time to see whether you have to repair your old cabinet and then you can get down to painting it.

Things you will need:

Easy and affordable

A DIY project is not only easy but it is also a very affordable option as well. It does pay to learn the different painting techniques before proceeding further. The brushed stainless steel patina and the French Nuevo finish are options that are worth checking out.

1. Remove hinges and knobs

After unscrewing the hardware in your cabinet you need to take a screwdriver and remove the hinges as well as knobs. Next, take a drop cloth and lay it on the countertop and the working surface. Place the doors of the cabinet on the drop cloth.
Pour about one third of a cup of all-purpose cleaner and mix it with a gallon of water in a bucket. Use a sponge to soak up the mixture and clean the cabinet with this sponge. After wiping the cabinet clean allow some time for it to dry.

2. Sand the surface

Take 100 grit sandpaper and attach it to an electric sander. Use the sander to sand down the cabinet surface. Once this is done, replace the 100 grit sandpaper with 220 grit sandpaper and repeat the sanding operation. Then remove the 220 grit sandpaper and replace it with 320 grit sandpaper and once more sand the cabinet surface. Next, use a tack cloth to remove all traces of sanding residue from the surface of the cabinet.

3. Prime the cabinet

Now it is time to prime the cabinet. Use a three inch nylon paintbrush and dip it in oil based primer. Apply the primer to the cabinet and give it a light coat of primer. Allow between four and five hours for the primer to dry. Now use a paintbrush and apply paint (oil based) on the cabinet surface. Create a light coat of paint on the surface of the cabinet and then let it remain so overnight so that the paint has enough time to dry up completely. Now, apply a second and light coat of paint on the cabinet and give enough time for this coat to dry up completely.

Take the paintbrush and dip it into some oil based varnish and then apply this on the cabinet giving it a clear coat. Application of the oil based varnish helps in protecting the work that you have done. Allow 24 hours for the varnish to dry up.

All that remains now is to replace the hardware and doors that were removed prior to the start of the DIY painting job. Reinstall the hardware and your job is done.
