How To Paint Cabinets

It is easy to paint a cabinet. All that you need to do is learn a few basic tried and tested rules which will help to make the task of painting cabinets a simple one. There are several steps involved which you need to learn about. These steps include:

1.Use paint swatches

The first thing that you need to do is make use of paint swatches to help you choose the right palette. Once you have chosen a color you will then need to get down to cleaning your cabinet so that no grease, grime dirt and dust remain in any part of the cabinet. You can clean the cabinet on the inside and outside with a sponge which is dipped in water mixed with a cleanser.

2. Remove cabinets from the wall

Next, you will need to remove the cabinets from the wall and also remove the hinges and other hardware. Store these in a safe place in a big sized zip-lock bag. Once the hardware and hinges have been removed you must then place a drop cloth and then lay the cabinet doors and drawers on it so that you can paint everything in one go in a single convenient place.

3. Sand the cabinet

It is now time to sand the cabinets. Though some people do not think that sanding the cabinets is necessary it does pay to sand the cabinet, especially if you want it to look super shiny and glossy. You can either use an electric sander or you can do the sanding manually with a fine grit paper.

4. Oil-based primer

If your cabinets were installed in a kitchen there is a strong likelihood that the cabinets will have become all greasy and dirty. For such cabinets, it is very important to use an oil-based primer or even the water-based equivalent. A single coat of primer should be applied with the help of a nice roller. The best rollers are wool or polyester ones as these are better than the foam rollers.

5. Paint the cabinet

Once the primer has been applied you are ready to get down and paint your cabinet. Two coats of paint are normally sufficient. You can use latex paint in semi-gloss finish as this will make it easy for you to wipe your cabinets later on. When the time comes to apply the paint, make sure that you do so with a good quality wool/polyester roller as it will help you apply the paint in the sleekest manner possible. Some people prefer using a mini foam roller as it is smaller in size and easier to control.

After applying the required numbers of coats of paint, you have to wait till the paint dries up. Most experts suggest that you allow three days (at the very least)for the paint to dry. It pays to wait five days for the paint to dry up absolutely.

Once the paint has dried, you need to put all the hardware and hinges back and then replace the cabinet where it belongs – either in your bathroom or kitchen. That is all that you need to do to paint your cabinet.
