Spray Painting Cabinets

1. Empty out the cabinet

To spray paint your cabinets, it is necessary to complete a few important steps. Emptying out the cabinets is the first thing that has to be done. Next, clean up the cabinets from the inside as well as from the outside. There is no sense in spray painting over dirt. So, be sure to clean the cabinets so that all dirt and grime has been removed.

2. Remove cabinet doors

The next step involves removal of the cabinet doors. This is an easy job but it can become tedious if there are too many cabinets to be spray painted. It is also necessary to remove the hinges from the cabinets. You should place the hinges in a secure place so that they are easy to find when you need to screw them back after the spray painting has been completed.

The cabinets also need to be unscrewed from the walls. For this, you may need to ask a helper to assist you complete this step. The helper should be there to hold up the cabinet until all the screws have been taken out.

3. Sand the cabinet

Before spray painting your cabinets you need to sand the cabinets as well as their doors. The best sander is one that is of a medium grit as it helps in removing the lacquer. Once the lacquer has been removed, you will then need to sand the cabinets with a fine grit sander.

4. Spray paint the cabinet door

Next, lay some drop cloth and prop the cabinet doors with the help of a few pieces of wood. Take the spray paint and shake it up and then start spraying the paint from a distance of about one foot from the cabinet doors. It makes sense to spray from the left side towards the right and make sure that you spray with even strokes. Allow the first coat to dry up.

Once the first coat has dried up, you can apply a second coat and allow some time for this new coat of paint to dry up. Once the second coat has dried up you can apply a coat of lacquer. The coat of lacquer will provide protection for your paint. It is easy to purchase lacquer in spray paint form at any good hardware store.

Once this has been done, your cabinets are ready. The next step is to replace them and put them back where they were. After that, you can fit the doors back. Remember, that to get a smooth surface you have to wipe the cabinets with a wet cloth and then sand the cabinets. Allow this to sit overnight and then complete the sanding. Be sure to wear a face mask to avoid breathing in dangerous fumes.
