Painting Laminate Cabinets

The nice thing about laminate cabinets is that they are cheap and easy to replace. Painting laminate cabinets too is a good idea as it helps to give the cabinets a makeover at a very affordable price. All that one needs to do is learn to use proper primer and the results will be very pleasing. Painting laminate cabinets is an especially good idea if your laminate cabinets happen to be in good condition.

What you need

Here is a look at what needs to be done.

1. Remove the doors

Use a screwdriver to remove the doors from the cabinet. Next remove everything from the cabinet drawers and remove these as well. At the same time, it also helps if you remove all items of hardware and then one must clean the cabinet doors and drawers as well as bases to ensure that no dust, dirt or grease stains are left.

2. Sand the cabinet

Follow this by sanding the cabinet doors as well as the front of the drawers and use 100 grit sandpaper for this task. Wipe the surface clean with a lint cloth and make sure that the cabinet bases are also sanded and cleaned.

3. Paint the primer

After sanding and cleaning the cabinets, it is now time to paint some primer on the doors of the cabinet as well as the fronts of the drawers and the base. Sometimes, there is need to apply a second coat of primer, especially if the first coat did not cover everything.

4. Apply the first coat of paint

The next step is to wait for the primer to dry. After everything is nice and dry, apply the first coat of paint. Use colored latex paint of a suitable color. Paint all of the doors and fronts of the drawers as well as the bases and make sure that the first coat of paint is even and uniform. Give twenty-four hours for the paint to dry before proceeding further.
After the first coat of paint has dried, you will want to apply a second coat of paint. This involves using the same techniques as were used when painting the first coat of paint. Wait for another twenty-four hours for the second paint of coat to dry.

It is important that new coat of paint is properly protected. To ensure that the paint is properly protected, one needs to apply one coat of clear sealer which should be applied to the doors and front of the cabinet as well as to the base. Use a sealer that is either semi-gloss or high-gloss and this can either be painted or you can spray it on. It will take an entire day and night for the gloss to dry. So, be sure to wait patiently for the drying process to complete.

After the gloss has dried it is time to replace everything back in their original positions. The hardware has to be replaced and the cabinet doors have also to be reinstalled. After that, you can put the drawers back. Wait for a few days before closing the drawers as the paint has to cure and it takes a few days for that.
