Crackle Paint Cabinets

It is easy to crackle paint your cabinet. This painting option helps to make your kitchen look more attractive and you can achieve your objectives without needing to invest a lot of money. However, it does take some time to complete the job. Here is a look at the steps that you need to take in order to complete the crackle painting of your cabinet.

Things you will need:

1. Prepare the cabinets

Before you paint your cabinet you have to first of all prepare the cabinets. For this you have to remove the cabinet doors from their hinges and you need to store the doors and other hardware in a place where you can paint them. A well ventilated place such as your garage is ideally suited for painting your cabinet doors. After removing the doors of the cabinet, you have to clean up the cabinet and the doors with a good all-purpose cleaner and a clean rag. After allowing these items to dry you can then start sanding them in a light and gentle manner. A fine-grade sander is right for this step.

Sanding makes it easy for the paint to adhere and grip well. It also means that there is less chance that the surface will chip or even peel away. After sanding, wipe the surface clean and make sure that no traces of sawdust are left on the surface of the doors and cabinet.

2. Apply primer and paint

After cleaning and sanding the cabinet, you have to think about applying primer and paint. First of all, you have to prime your cabinet. The primer will prevent the paint from peeling and it also helps to ensure that you can complete the job with least number of coats of paint. The primer must be allowed to dry up completely before painting the cabinet.

When painting the cabinet, be sure to keep the layers of paint thin. Do not try to paint in thick layers as a thin layer will make the cabinet look more pleasing and it also gives the appearance that the paint was applied professionally. However, if you are looking for a rustic looking crackle finish then you may have to use thick layers of paint. Even so, keep in mind the fact that thick layers tend to make the paint surface look more uneven.

Whether you choose to apply a thin or thick layer, you must allow enough time for the paint to dry. You can apply as many layers as are required to obtain the desired look.

3. Crackling the cabinet

The crackle effect can be obtained by applying crackle glaze that you can purchase from any home improvement outlet. The glaze should be applied to the painted cabinet. Use brush strokes in one direction only. If you are looking to obtain plenty of thin cracks then use a thin layer of crackle glaze. Allow enough time for the glaze to turn absolutely dry.

Once the glaze has dried, you can then apply the last and final paint coat which should be applied in a perpendicular direction to the glaze brush strokes. After an hour, the crackle effect will become visible.
