Painting Cabinets White

Painting cabinets white can be fun, provided you complete all the necessary steps. When a person paints their cabinets white they will find that it takes a lot of time and the task is monotonous as well as boring. It can actually even take more than a week to complete the job for those who plan on working in the evenings.

Things you will need:

To cut time, it pays to devote larger chunks of time to the task.

1 Take out the doors and drawers

The first thing that has to be done before painting cabinets white is to remove the doors out of the cabinet and then take out its drawers. Remove all the hardware and keep it in a safe and secure place. It also pays to put everything in a bag which should be labeled.

2. Sand the cabinets

The second step is to sand the cabinets. Though some people may be of the opinion that sanding is not necessary, the truth of the fact is that this is an important step as it helps you in creating a look that is smooth and very seamless. Sanding also helps when you have cabinets that are very glossy.

3. Remove dust and grime

The third step requires you to wipe down your cabinets so that all dust and grime are removed. Next, it is necessary to choose one’s supplies. After removing the dirt and dust and grime it pays to use a two inch high density foam roller to apply the paint. It may be necessary to apply more numbers of coats with this roller but the end results are very pleasing because the paint will go in very smoothly. To reach corners and places that are hard to reach it is recommended to use a two and a half inch angled paint brush.

4. Prime and paint

The fourth step involves priming and painting. It pays to prime everything with something that is in pure white. There may not be any need to use oil-based paint because enamel paint which dries hard and is very glossy as well as washable will provide better results. If the cabinets are stained in a different color, it may be necessary to apply several coats of white paint to get a smooth finish. The end result will be truly amazing if the coats are applied properly and in sufficient numbers.

It pays to paint the cabinet on the inside as well as outside. After that, the fifth step is to seal with the help of water-based polyurethane. This will provide added protection and it makes the cabinets more washable. Make use of water-based polyurethane instead of oil-based polyurethane as the latter may yellow after some time and spoil the look of the cabinets.

5. Wait for the paint to cure

The sixth step is to wait patiently for the paint to cure. There is no sense in nicking the beautifully painted white cabinets which is why it pays to be patient. The more time you allow for the paint to cure the better the results.

Once the sixth step has been completed, you only need to replace all the hardware back on the cabinets and the drawers.
